World's top 50 routes by seats

2023 still isn't 2019 in most places

A simple look this week at how the world’s busiest routes are faring when compared to 2019.

Looking at scheduled daily seats as of October 2023 versus 2019, the usual suspects still round out the top 10, although with reduced capacity. The monster route between Seoul’s Gimpo and Jeju remains number one but is down a whopping 30% compared to 2019 levels.

Beijing’s Daxing airport has joined the game, opening in September 2019 and finding sufficient seats to Guangzhou Baiyun to fit into spot 26 on the list.

Considering the geography of the top routes, East Asia still sees the lion’s share. Even as North America represents 40% of the world’s commercial aviation market, its concentration is relatively low and often split among multiple airports in the same city.

A closer look at the GTF inspection estimates

The wave of GTF inspections is massive. More aircraft hours could be lost for 320neo aircraft than 737 MAX aircraft at the start of the grounding.
