Visualizing the reach of Qantas
The Spirit of Australia now spans all continents*
The Qantas network has been growing. This week, we offer a quick chart showing the Qantas international network from a different perspective.
The Spirit of Australia has long tested the range capabilities of long-haul aircraft. The lone operator of the 747-400ER, Qantas extended its reach into North America, but it wasn’t until the arrival of the 787-9 that Qantas could hit the holy grail - London.
Traditionally served through one-stop destinations (including a one-stop through Singapore that still operates today), Qantas utilized the 787-9 to offer Australia’s first nonstop service to London - from Perth.
Recently, Qantas has announced they will also add service to Rome and Paris with the aircraft, tripling the number of European destinations offered non-stop from Australia.
However, what is most unique about the Qantas route map are the two southern routes, one across the Indian Ocean to Johannesburg, South Africa, and the other across the Pacific to Santiago, Chile.
These “upside-down” flights challenge our typically north hemispherian minds. SYD-SCL, specifically, requires either four engines or 330-minute ETOPs. It’s a long way from suitable airports, and Antarctica doesn’t count.
Speaking of Antarctica, Qantas partners with a local travel company to offer sightseeing flights of Antarctica using the 787-9. The 12-and-a-half-hour flight offers a round-trip flight over Antarctica, complete with picturesque views.
But before you rush to book your $2,200 ticket to nowhere and nestle into your picturesque window seat for the long trip, don’t get too comfortable. The ticket requires you to swap to the middle halfway through.
