LEAP engine trouble

A peak behind the curtain at LEAP engine challenges

TL;DR - Access the quick research on LEAP-1A/1B shop visits here.

Engines - the only thing separating airplanes from gliders.

As much as the industry loves to talk airplanes (ourselves included), much of today’s competitive edge is unlocked by a deep understanding of what is happening in the world of turbine engines.

While we do not often focus on engines in this newsletter, it is due to one very simple reason: engines are far too interesting.

The newsletter you read here each week is only a small part of what we do. In fact, it’s somewhat of a byproduct.

Our day jobs include conducting contrarian research on the aviation industry. Subscribers include some of the largest airlines, aircraft lessors, manufacturers, and aviation suppliers from around the world.

Only the key industry conclusions are included in our research, leaving the mildly interesting to… well… you.

Except this week.

This week, we are offering a peak behind the curtain at some of our most impactful research involving engines.

Heard a lot about Pratt & Whitney’s GTF? Who hasn’t?

But as the world focuses on the known challenges of the GTF, airlines and lessors are concerned about the unknown challenges of GE’s LEAP engine.

Aha! The making of contrarian research.

The chart above examines research provided as part of the March Aircraft Intelligence Monthly from Visual Approach Research. It focuses on the wave of LEAP-1A/1B engines rapidly approaching shop visits.

The problem? Those shop visits are arriving sooner than anticipated – much sooner - and with more issues than anticipated.

But rather than re-hashing the findings, read the report for yourself.

We haven’t stopped at just the LEAP engines, either. We have recently published contrarian insights on the PW1000, PW1500, Trent 1000, GEnx, and GE90.

Are you at an aviation OEM, airline, lessor, or supplier and do not yet receive our research?

Your competitors do.
